Life Sharing through Family Living

Fayette Resources Family Living Program is an alternative way to provide community living for people with developmental disabilities. They live in a family-oriented home, and are included as part of the family's normal, everyday lifestyle.

This program has been actively supported by the agency since its inception. It has been remarkably successful, and there is evidence of long-lasting and meaningful commitment to the individuals on the part of the families choosing to participate in this life-sharing program. The individuals have had the opportunity to experience life-changing events including holiday celebrations, routine participation in family events, birthdays, the birth of new family members and the deaths of others. This has become a way to enhance the quality of lives of people whereby they experience the intimate and personal events which create relationships in a family and build lasting ties.

Most individuals have a daily schedule of attending school or a day program, which enhances their growth and skill development. The Family Living/Life Sharing provider may be married or single, with or without children. We welcome inquiries from anyone who is willing to share his or her life and home with a person who is disabled. Subsidized by county and state offices the program gives families an opportunity to work in their own home and to be compensated accordingly.

Comprehensive training is provided to each family before an individual is placed into their home. This training, as well as ongoing annual training, enables the family to become familiar with Fayette Resources' policies and procedures, family dynamics and sustained emphasis on everyday living skills. Fayette Resources' person centered training also creates an ideal environment for the individual to make a smooth transition into the community.
